About Us
SoCal Academy was created by two educators, biologists, and parents who believe children learn best when they are given the freedom to explore, to be themselves, ask questions, create, and connect with the world around them.
Our story began with a shared love for learning and a desire to create something different: a place where education feels meaningful, joyful, and connected to real life.
With backgrounds in biology, child development, science, nature education, chess, and mindfulness, we bring different areas of knowledge together to create rich learning experiences for children.
We believe every child has their own way of thinking, communicating, exploring, and growing. That is why we strive to create an environment that is inclusive, neurodiverse-friendly, and respectful of each child’s individual needs and interests.
Since 2023, SoCal Academy has grown from our vision into a community where children can learn through science, nature, creativity, movement, problem-solving, and play.

Tonatzin is a biologist, educator, nature enthusiast, and mom of two boys.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, with a focus on conservation, ecology, restoration, and science communication, as well as an Associate Degree in Child Development.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, with a focus on conservation, ecology, restoration, and science communication, as well as an Associate Degree in Child Development.
Her experience includes teaching science across elementary, middle, and high school, and working as a nature educator.
Her deep connection to nature has led her to work as a Trail Guide with Mission Trails Regional Park and as a Canyoneer with the San Diego Natural History Museum’s Botany Department.
She is also internationally certified in Yoga for Kids and Yoga for Neurodivergent Kids, bringing movement, mindfulness, and an understanding of individual needs into her teaching.
Since 2023, Tonatzin has been the founder and lead educator of SoCal Academy, combining science, child development, nature, and education to create engaging, inclusive, and meaningful learning experiences for every child.

Michael is a biologist, educator, passionate chess player, and a very present dad of two boys.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, with a focus on biotechnology, biochemistry, genetics, and microbiology. His scientific background allows him to turn complex concepts into engaging, age-appropriate learning experiences.
Chess has been an important part of Michael’s life for many years. He is a certified chess coach and has been playing and teaching chess since 2010. Through chess, he helps children develop strategic thinking, concentration, problem-solving, patience, and confidence.
As Founder and Educator at SoCal Academy, Michael brings together his love of science, chess, and teaching. As a father, he also brings a genuine understanding of the importance of creating a learning environment where children feel supported, respected, and encouraged to be themselves.
